The free app store has been getting a lot of attention lately with Apple announcing the iPhone XS Max, and Android OEMs like OnePlus and Xiaomi releasing their own devices.
Now the apps industry is gearing up for the launch of Windows 10, and with Microsoft making its first hardware purchase of a device, it’s also making some big hardware changes.
Here’s what you need to know about Microsoft’s Windows 10 hardware purchase.
What is a ‘Hardware Purchase’?
Microsoft announced its hardware purchase for the first time this week, making it clear that the company is investing heavily in its own hardware development.
Microsoft’s new flagship smartphone, codenamed “Yuga”, will feature a 12-core, 8-thread processor, a 5.5-inch display, an 8MP camera, a 1.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 16MP rear camera, and a 5MP front-facing camera.
This is all housed in a metal body with a “metal-to-metal” (M2M) connection.
As we noted in our Windows 10 preview article, Microsoft’s first major hardware purchase was the Surface Pro 3 in September 2017.
The Surface Pro 4, with its 11th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, was announced in February 2018.
Microsoft has also been buying up more and more Windows 10-compatible hardware, with the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro 2 devices recently announcing their own versions of Windows and OS upgrades.
Microsoft’s first purchase was made on July 1, 2018, when the company announced that it would acquire Nokia’s mobile hardware division for $7.5 billion.
Since then, Microsoft has made numerous hardware acquisitions, including the Microsoft Band and Xbox accessories, as well as the Xbox Fitness and Microsoft Surface apps.
The Microsoft Surface Hub, an accessory for the Surface and Surface Laptops, will also be available for purchase on July 12.
The Hub will let users access Microsoft’s Office apps, Outlook and Skype on their PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
The Microsoft Band is the company’s latest and most comprehensive Bluetooth earbuds, and it’ll also be made available for Windows Phones and Windows Phone Pro devices.
The Xbox One S, Microsoft Xbox One and Xbox One X, the Xbox One games console, and the Xbox Kinect are available for the Xbox Store.
Microsoft announced the Xbox 360 console in October 2016.
Microsoft is also expanding its partnership with Microsoft Play, which means that Xbox games can be played on PCs, mobile devices, and Xbox-compatible gaming consoles.
As you can see from the table above, the company has made some significant hardware purchases in the past year.
It’s a pretty big move, especially considering that it’s not yet a year old.
The hardware is being bought in the form of a massive acquisition, which will have a huge impact on the overall ecosystem, and potentially make a significant impact on how much money Microsoft makes from Windows.
As part of the hardware acquisition, Microsoft also announced that the Surface Studio, a new, more flexible version of the Surface with a lower price tag, will be available in January 2019.
Microsoft also confirmed the Surface Hub as an accessory to its Xbox One accessories, which include Xbox accessories like the Xbox Wireless Controller and the Kinect accessories.
Microsoft said that it will also add Surface accessories for the upcoming Surface Pro, Xbox 360, and Surface Book devices in 2019.
Microsoft is also looking to invest heavily in new gaming hardware with its own games.
Microsoft bought Valve’s Source Engine software in 2018 and is looking to bring Valve’s new Steam Machine gaming system to market later this year.
Microsoft recently announced that its own Xbox One game development kit will be launching later this month.
